The Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology is used to remove dissolved solids, colour, organic contaminants and nitrate from feed stream. Reverse osmosis is most commonly known for its use in drinking water purification from seawater.
The RO process consists of feed, permeate and reject stream.
It is a membrane based process technology that purifies water by separating the dissolved solids from the feed stream. This results in what is known as permeate; the reject stream finds use in various applications across domestic and industrial use.
RO technology is used in the treatment of water and hazardous waste and separation processes across industries. It is also used for recovery of organic and inorganic materials from chemical processes. RO process has found application in treating municipal wastewater to remove dissolve solids and for removal of organic and inorganic pollutants present in waste water.
Positives:
- Is used in treatment of water and hazardous waste
- Removes dissolved solids better than conventional treatment processes
- Removes organics and inorganic pollutants
Industries: Waste water treatment requires a variety of strategies to remove the contamination. Most large industries viz., Complex organic chemicals industry, Electric power plants, Food industry, Iron and steel industry, Mines and quarries, Nuclear industry, Pulp and paper industry, Industrial oil contamination, Generic Water treatment, Wool processing, to name a few, require waste water treatment as part of compliance needs. Like you, many look beyond compliance, as their responsibility towards planet earth.
Ultra-filtration(UF):
If your industry produces oil containing waste streams that are difficult to treat, then UF may the best choice for pre-treatment of water, before it is fed to an RO system.
Where high concentrations of emulsified oils and fats are washed down, compliance would demand aggressive filtration and treatment before discharge. Recent advances have seen the use of Integrated Membrane System(IMS) which is a simple system designed with an ultra filtration as pre-treatment layer prior to being RO-ed.
